Explore the Historic Preveli Monastery with AutoClubRent

Located on the stunning south coast of Crete, just 37 kilometers from Rethymno and close to the village of Lefkogia, Preveli Monastery is one of the most important historical and spiritual landmarks of the island.
A Complex of Two Monasteries
The site consists of two distinct monastic complexes:
- Kato (Lower) Monastery: Founded during the Venetian rule, possibly as early as 1594, by a feudal lord named Prevelis. It was destroyed by the Turks in 1821 and remains abandoned to this day.
- Piso (Back) Monastery: Located 3 km further up, this is a fully operational monastery open to the public. It features a beautiful two-aisled church dedicated to St. John the Divine and the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary, along with abbot’s quarters, refectories, a bakery, library, and a small museum.
Preveli's Role in History
The monastery played a vital role in Cretan resistance throughout the centuries:
- In the Revolution of 1866, it sheltered partisans fighting against Turkish forces. As a result, Piso Preveli was destroyed in 1867 and later rebuilt in 1897.
- During World War II, the monastery provided refuge to Allied soldiers stranded after the Battle of Crete. Disguised as monks, they were hidden and helped escape by sea — an act that gave Preveli global recognition as a symbol of freedom and courage.
