Vai Beach – The Palm Paradise of Eastern Crete

Vai Beach – The Palm Paradise of Eastern Crete

Vai Beach is one of the most exotic and beautiful beaches in eastern Crete, renowned not only for its golden sand and crystal-clear waters but also for its spectacular palm tree forest that stretches all the way to the shoreline.

This unique palm grove, known as the Vai Palm Forest, is home to more than 5,000 Phoenix Theophrasti palm trees and spans over 250 hectares. It is the only natural palm forest in Europe, making Vai a truly rare and unforgettable destination.

Legends Behind the Palm Forest

Several legends and theories surround the origin of the Vai forest. Some say the Arabs planted the trees during their occupation of Crete. Others believe they were planted by Saracen pirates who took refuge nearby. A more ancient tale suggests that Egyptian soldiers who came to assist the city of Itanos created the forest during a conflict with Pressos and Ierapytna.

Vai Through the Years

During the late 1970s, Vai became a popular stop among hippies, which unfortunately led to its degradation. By the early 1980s, the beach had turned into an unregulated campground and dumping ground. Thankfully, conservation efforts restored its beauty, and Vai is now a protected natural area, home to rare flora and fauna.
