The Lassithi Plateau, located within the prefecture of Lassithi in eastern Crete, spans an area of approximately 25 square kilometers and stands as one of the island’s most fascinating geographical features. Surrounded by the Dikti Mountain range, which acts as a natural barrier, the plateau is watered by the snowmelt from the mountains, making it one of the most fertile regions in Greece.
This lush and green plateau has been inhabited since the Neolithic period and continues to thrive agriculturally. Fruit trees and vegetables grow abundantly, producing high-quality apples, pears, cherries, potatoes, walnuts, and almonds. Despite the growth of tourism, agriculture remains at the heart of local life.
Often referred to as the plateau of windmills, Lassithi once had over 10,000 traditional windmills with white-cloth sails. While many are now out of use, they still form a picturesque landscape against the Dikti Mountains. Some windmills have been restored, and modern turbines now capture the frequent mountain breezes to support local sustainability.
The plateau is dotted with around 20 traditional villages, each full of charm and Cretan hospitality. The village of Agios Georgios hosts both a Folk Museum and a museum dedicated to Eleftherios Venizelos. In Agios Konstantinos, you can visit the Monastery of Panagia Kroustallenia, while the Church of the Holy Cross in Germiado is another highlight.
One of the main attractions of the Lassithi Plateau is the Dikteon Andron, a legendary cave believed to be the birthplace of Zeus. According to myth, Rhea hid baby Zeus in this cave to protect him from his father Cronus. The cave contains impressive stalactites, stalagmites, and remnants of ancient cult practices. It was extensively explored by British archaeologist David Hogarth.
Whether you're seeking natural beauty, mythology, local culture or traditional Cretan villages, the Lassithi Plateau offers a rich experience in the heart of Crete.
