Very close to the traditional mountainous village of Kritsa lies the historic Byzantine church of Panagia Kera, one of the most important religious monuments in Crete. Located at an altitude of 630 meters in the mountains of Dikte, the church overlooks a verdant valley and offers a remarkable setting.
Dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin, the exact founding date of Panagia Kera remains uncertain. The central aisle of the church, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, contains the oldest frescoes, while the northern aisle, dedicated to Agios Antonios, features vivid scenes of the Judgment Day.
Many miracles have been attributed to the icon of Panagia Kera. According to tradition, during the Byzantine period of Iconoclasm, the icon was moved to Constantinople but miraculously returned to Crete. During Venetian rule in 1498, it was stolen by a Greek trader and later transported to the Church of Saint Alfonso in Rome, where it remains today.
In 1722, the church was restored by the Managgaris family and converted into a Holy Cross church. The current icon in the monastery is a faithful reproduction created in 1732 by an unknown artist, believed to preserve the original’s miraculous powers.
The Byzantine architecture of Panagia Kera is characterized by ceramic decorations, pointed arches, and its serene presence. The interior is adorned with well-preserved 14th-century frescoes painted during the Paleologian Renaissance, notable for their vivid colors and expressive detail.
