The Cave of Milatos is located in the Prefecture of Lassithi, just 3 km from the village of Milatos. Though not known for impressive stalactites or stalagmites, this cave holds deep historical and emotional significance for the people of Crete.

During the Greek War of Independence in February 1823, approximately 3,600 residents sought refuge in the cave, attempting to escape the brutal suppression of the revolution by the Ottoman Turks. After a two-week siege, most were massacred, with 18 priests burned alive and others sold as slaves to Egypt.

To honor the memory of those who perished, a small church dedicated to Saint Thomas was built inside the cave in 1935. A memorial within the cave hosts the bones of the victims, and a religious service is held annually to commemorate the tragedy.

The cave itself is vast, measuring 73 meters in length and 63 meters in width, with eight entrances and a height that varies between 1 and 3 meters. Archaeological findings indicate human presence dating back to the Neolithic period.

To reach the cave, visitors can park in the valley beneath and then follow a narrow 200-meter footpath along the slopes of a gorge. Despite the hike, the journey is well worth it for those interested in Cretan history, nature, and sacrifice.
