The archaeological site of Ancient Lato is located in the region of Lassithi, near Agios Nikolaos, on the island of Crete. Regarded as one of the most important Doric city-states in Ancient Crete, Lato predates even the Doric Descent and offers deep insight into the island’s classical past.
Built between two hills, the city enjoyed a natural defensive advantage and offers stunning panoramic views over Mirabella Bay. It was named after the goddess Leto (known as “Lato” in the Doric dialect), the mythological mother of Apollo and Artemis.
Lato was a member of the League of Cretan Cities and regularly engaged in territorial disputes with neighboring Olous. The modern site of Agios Nikolaos is thought to have been built over the ancient port of Lato.
The archaeological identification and first systematic excavations were carried out in the late 19th century by F. Halbherr, L. Mariani, and A. Taramelli, followed by a French excavation team from 1899 to 1901.
With its unique blend of historical significance, archaeological depth, and natural beauty, Ancient Lato is a must-visit for travelers exploring Crete's cultural heritage. Visit it today with a rental car from AutoClub and uncover the past!
