To reach the closest beach to Chania Town, simply follow the coastal road westward from the Venetian Harbor, passing through the old city’s Western Moat (Trench). The beach lies at the edge of the district called Nea Chora, a charming and steadily developing area northwest of the city center.
Along the way, you will spot the historical building of the ABEA soap factory—one of Crete’s oldest industrial landmarks—with its tall chimney still preserved. Just across the street from this landmark are the National Water Sports Center of Chania and the city’s Nautical Club.
Nea Chora boasts a clean, sandy beach and a quaint fishing harbor that enhance its local flavor. Stretching along the beach are several well-known fish taverns where visitors can enjoy freshly caught seafood with a sea view.
Each summer, the area comes alive during the Sardine Festival, a beloved local celebration featuring traditional music, folk dancing, and of course, free grilled sardines offered to all guests.
Nea Chora combines the comfort of proximity to Chania with the authentic feel of a seaside village, making it a perfect spot for a relaxed beach day, delicious dining, and cultural immersion.
