Balos Beach is one of the most breathtaking natural wonders in Crete and is located at the northwesternmost point of Chania. Famous for its shallow turquoise waters, white-pink sand, and exotic scenery, Balos looks like a dreamy lagoon when viewed from the surrounding hills.
Across from the beach lies the rocky islet of Gramvoussa, crowned with a majestic Venetian castle offering panoramic views over the sea and the Cretan coastline.
There are two main ways to reach Balos:
Driving a rental car to Balos is strictly prohibited by most rental agreements. The dirt road is dangerous and not covered by standard insurance policies. Violating this condition may result in void insurance and extra charges from the rental agency.
Therefore, if you’re traveling with a rented car, you should opt for the boat from Kissamos port to reach Balos.
Balos is part of the Natura 2000 protected areas due to its rare flora and fauna. Its shallow warm waters are ideal for children and non-swimmers. The incredible color contrasts, the wild rocky landscape, and the isolation from busy resorts make it a top destination for photographers and nature lovers.
Tip: If you plan to hike down to the beach from the parking area at the end of the dirt road, bring proper footwear, water, and sun protection, as the descent is rocky and unshaded.
Balos Beach is a must-visit location in Chania, offering a unique blend of adventure, nature, and unforgettable beauty – just remember to reach it the right way!
